How to stop your Toyota Hilux being stolen
The Hilux is the vehicle syndicates ask for by name, wanted for cross-border resale, parts and farm use. Which method is used against yours depends on whether it has push-button start. Here is each one, and what genuinely stops it.
The short answer. Both methods used against a Hilux end with a key the factory immobiliser accepts, which is why the factory system does not stop them. carGuardian adds an authentication the thief cannot obtain — a PIN on the dashboard buttons, an encrypted fob, or your phone. Can a Toyota Hilux be stolen without the key?
Yes. On models with push-button start, a relay attack amplifies the signal from a key inside your home and starts the vehicle outside. On every Hilux regardless of how it starts, a key programmer plugged into the diagnostic port writes a new key that the factory immobiliser accepts.
Which Hilux models are targeted most?
Double cabs hold value and cross borders easily, so they are the ones most often requested. Single cabs are taken too, frequently for parts and farm use, and they are the easiest to lift onto a truck.
Does the Hilux factory immobiliser not already protect it?
It protects against hot-wiring, which is what it was designed for in the 1990s. It cannot tell the difference between your key and a brand-new one programmed through the diagnostic port, because as far as the vehicle is concerned both are factory-issued.
Will carGuardian affect my Hilux service or warranty?
